Foundation Repairs

CONCRETE & BRICK FOUNDATION STABILIZATION!

Fortress Stabilization Systems are the industry leader in home foundation repair and concrete reinforcement. Utilizing carbon fiber technologies for the repairs, homeowners now have access to the same concrete reinforcement and stabilization that Fortress uses in major highway, parking structure, bridge and high-rise construction.  Foundations and other cement structures will often crack as a result of settling, soil pressure, water damage, drying shrinkage, thermal movement, or other causes. As most homeowners know, basement wall fractures are common and a fact of life. Most fractures are minor and cause few problems. However, other fractures can grow over time and cause structural integrity or, more commonly, water leakage.

Frequently Asked Damage Restoration Questions

Q. WHAT SHOULD I DO IMMEDIATELY AFTER STORM DAMAGE TO MY HOUSE?

A. After a home has sustained storm damage, severe incidental damage might occur, including moisture and mold. These issues can create a situation of escalating damage. What started as a few missing shingles can morph into a serious moisture issue in the roofing substrate materials and the attic underneath. Homeowners can have difficulty working with insurance adjustors when submitting a claim for damage. Insurance companies have differing policies and criteria for claims, making the process challenging for a novice homeowner. A professional contractor needs to have experience working with insurance companies, which can help you receive the best results with a submitted claim.

Q. WATER DAMAGE FROM ROOF LEAK:
What can be done if our attic insulation got wet when the roof leaked?

A. The fluffy type insulation like fiberglass or cellulose will lose its R-value after it has gotten wet because it gets heavier and allows water to permeate other building materials (like the plywood, and wood framing as well as, the gypsum board). Typically, wet insulation should be discarded and replaced with new dry insulation. It’s always important to eliminate the source of the water damage before installing any new insulation or other materials.

Q. BASEMENT WATER DAMAGE:
We have a problem as our hot water heater leaked and filled our basement with a few inches of standing water. We don't know if we need to have all the walls removed and replaced?

A. Not necessarily, because there are times we are able to dry them and save them from needing to be replaced. We do recommend that walls with insulation need to be cut open at the bottom to dry to avoid the formation of mold.

Q. FLOOD WATER DAMAGE TO HOME:
How can a home be secured after storm water damage?

A. If it is safe to do so, make sure, your electricity is turned off. If you can, it's a good idea to shut off main supply valves for water and gas. If your house has a security system, notify the security agency. Lock exterior doors and make sure windows are also locked. If it's not dangerous to do so, it's a good idea to take pictures to document your disaster damage and make notes.

Q. SOOT & SMOKE DAMAGE:
Is it possible for me to clean up and get rid of the soot and smoke after a fire on my own?

A. You be able to but in most cases we really wouldn’t recommend it as it could lead to additional damage if done incorrectly. If you’ve just had a fire, it's best to let professionals assess the damage, and let you know the scope of what needs to be done to restore your fire damaged property. Different kinds of smoke and soot residues require different kinds of cleaning solutions, and improper treatment can cause the damage to get worse and harder to repair. This is the answer to the question.

Q. MOLD PROBLEM:
Is it okay for me to use bleach to kill mold I found behind the wallpaper?

A. Mold can be tricky and it's probably best to call a professional. The use of a chemical or biocide that kills organisms such as mold (chlorine bleach, for example) is not recommended as a routine practice during mold cleanup. In most cases, it is not possible or desirable to sterilize an area; a background level of mold spores will remain - these spores will not grow if the moisture problem has been resolved. If you choose to use disinfectants or biocides, be sure to ventilate the area and exhaust the air to the outdoors. Never, ever mix chlorine bleach with other cleaning solutions or detergents that contain ammonia because toxic fumes could be produced. And, even dead mold may still cause allergic reactions in some people, so it is not enough to simply kill the mold, it must also be removed.
